NEWS IN BRIEF
Haulier ned after driver losses arm
East Yorkshire-based animal feed supplier H Walton Ltd,
has been ned £200,000 for safety breaches after a lorry driver suffered injuries that led to the loss of his left arm. Leeds Magistrates’ court heard how
a lorry driver lost his footing
when delivering wheat, with
his arm coming into contact
with a rotating auger and was drawn in. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that a crucial interlocking device was not functioning, allowing the auger to run when the tailgate was open. The company pleaded guilty.
Something to look into
Lorry drivers have been asked by the Transport Committee
to provide information about potholes across the UK as part of an inquiry into the funding of local roads in England. It wants information on the condition
of local roads, economic
cost, monitoring pot holes, to name three. Type ‘transport committee’ into Google and scroll down to ‘potholes’. The deadline for written submissions is 2 October 2018.
Post-Brexit Employment ‘Timebomb’
The Of ce of National Statistics is concerned the status of European workers within the UK’s logistics sector is yet be settled in the ongoing Brexit negotiations. Clari cation
is needed, said the Freight Transport Association, to provide stability. More than 43,000 lorry drivers working in the UK are from the EU. Sally Gilson, FTA’s head of skills, added: “We know the plan for those EU workers wanting to gain settled status but not for those who come for seasonal work. Employers need clari cation on who is allowed to work, and the work they will be eligible to do, now, rather than in March 2019.”
